Kirinyaga in a Cup
The Origin
From the Gichugu district of Kirinyaga, this peaberry lot comes from smallholder farmers who deliver their harvest to the Karani washing station. At elevations of 1700–1800m (5577–5900 ft), the cool climate and volcanic soils nurture cultivars SL‑28, SL‑34, Ruiru 11, and Batian, prized for their complexity and resilience.
The Process
This coffee is wet‑processed in the classic Kenyan style and then sun‑dried on raised beds, ensuring clarity of flavor and a clean cup. Each peaberry—formed when only one seed develops inside the cherry—concentrates sugars and aromatics, resulting in a more intense profile.
The Cup
Expect a well‑centered sweetness with notes of dark caramel, baking spice, and peppery accents. As the cup cools, flavors evolve into orange peel, blackberry, and dried tamarind, underscored by a refreshing hibiscus‑like acidity. The aftertaste lingers with chai spices, clove, nutmeg, and aromatic bitters—a layered experience that keeps you coming back.
(From the cupping notes: “The brew has well‑centered sweetness… with tangy notes of blackberry and dried tamarind. The acidity level is super, underscored by tart hibiscus drink.”)
